The King of Wands is the type of boss you’d genuinely follow into a disastrous plan because he makes it sound like a good one.
In the Rider-Waite-Smith deck he is enthroned on a throne with lions and salamanders carved into it, and wears an orange-red cloak with a crown resembling flames. In one hand he has a wand, and if you look closely you can see it is sprouting little green leaves. At his feet is a little salamander. He leans forward a little, gazing to the side like he’s already thinking about what’s next. He doesn't look too relaxed. He looks like he is just about to stand up and start something.
I appreciate that detail in the leaf. The Page found a stick, the Knight is whirling it around at full gallop, and the Queen makes it her own. The King's wand is living. His fire's been with him long enough that it makes things flourish, instead of burning them.
In the suit of Wands, which is about drive, passion and creativity, the King is the one who takes all of that energy and makes it last. And he's got vision, and he can actually convince other people to buy into it. He may be a lot too. Large personality, prickly opinions, not always the best listener.
The King of Wands has just one question for you: what are you building, and who is it for?

Upright, this card is about taking control of your own life. You've learned, you've paid your dues, now you're ready to make the call. Not so much, "I got this idea and I’m excited for it," but, "I know what I’m doing and I’m gonna do it." He has a practical side that others miss. He isn’t only a big personality. He’s good at seeing the big picture and getting people on board. When he walks in, you know he's the boss even if nobody's given him the title. As a person, he’s usually someone confident, motivated and a little intense. A founder type, natural leader, someone who gives good presentations and sends long voice notes.
The King of Wands in love gives desire with a bit of maturity behind it. Unlike the Knight who’s all about the chase, the King truly wants to construct something. If you’re in a relationship, this card frequently refers to a spouse who is devoted, protective and generous, or to you being that person. Honesty is also implied. He means what he says. That can be invigorating, or sometimes a little blunt, so watch the delivery. If you’re single, chances are you know better what you want than you did. You’ve quit chasing folks who are lukewarm. Or you might find someone who is the King. Ambitious, charming and used to getting their own way. They are fun to be around but see if they allow any room for you to have your own say.
This is one of the best aspiration cards in the deck. Starting a business. Taking charge. Giving a presentation on a large scale. Applying for the job you've wanted for a year. That all fits. You're likely at a place where others are trusting your judgement or are soon to. Don't bet against that. If you are in a management position, this card is fantastic news, but it also reminds you to listen to your team rather than just steer. The best form of this King is the one that helps other people get better at their professions. The worst version basically wears them out.
The King of Wands is all about taking risks and dreaming big financially. He is good at spotting chances and willing to back them, thus this card can indicate a new business, a bold investment or a genuine endeavour to grow your income.
And he's not as reckless as the Knight either. If you’re jumping in, you’ve done your homework. If you haven't, this card is a prompt to do it before you commit. Confidence is a good tool, but a poor substitute for a spreadsheet.
The energy is big and you’re probably feeling driven. This card enjoys exercise that is goal orientated, like training for something, increasing strength, or taking on a challenge that you can quantify. Having a defined aim keeps you motivated.
The warning is the standard fire one – overwork. Kings tend to wear themselves out because they assume they are the only one that can accomplish the job. Sleep is not optional, even if you have huge plans.
Spiritually, the King of Wands is about owning your path and your destiny. You could be prepared to quit waiting for permission to live by your principles, even when it’s inconvenient. And it’s about integrity, too. His power only really works when it's in line with what he believes. A useful question to ask yourself with this card is: Am I living my life or simply reacting to it?
It gets out of hand in reverse. Leadership becomes control, confidence becomes hubris, and the grand vision becomes something no-one else is permitted to challenge. Or it might refer to a King who has run out of steam and is faking it.
The reversed King in love can be someone who is overbearing, quick-tempered or someone who needs to win every fight. It could be a domineering relationship, or it could be you being stubborn and not giving any ground. It can also mean a partnership in which one person’s ambition takes up all the space. If your requirements keep getting pushed down the list, take note. For singles, it can imply you’re being fussy in ways that don’t serve you, or attracted to people who are charming but all about themselves.
Bad boss, power struggle or you being the one that's gotten hard to work with. He is impatient, takes credit, and doesn’t take critique well. If you are seeing folks go quiet in your meetings it may be worth asking why. It can also be a sign of grand intentions that go nowhere because the follow-through is lacking, or a leader who is stretched too thin and pretending they aren’t.
Overconfidence with cash. Taking enormous chances without doing your homework, or spending as if you are already rich. It can be a sign of a business developing too rapidly for its own good. Take your time and obtain a second opinion from someone not scared to tell you no.
Burnout, severe stress and a shorter than normal temper. You might be using work to avoid dealing with something else. Blood pressure, sleep and tension are worth keeping an eye on, and a check-up might not be a bad idea if you’ve been neglecting things. It could feel like a sign of weakness, but asking for help is not.
The King of Wands reversed is asking about your ego. Where are you pressing because you want to be correct, not because it’s the right thing? It’s a difficult inquiry, but the responses are typically helpful. True strength is being able to confess, "I was wrong," without breaking apart.
As a past card: You were moulded by a powerful leader or mentor, or you moved into a period of taking the reins and creating something.
As a present card: You are urged to lead, decide or stand up. Don’t wait for someone else to do it.
As a future card: An opportunity to be in control or start something bigger is coming. Get ready for it.
As a daily draw: Be decisive. Listen, then make that call you've been putting off.
Tip: Trust your vision and pursue it. Then make sure that everybody around you is on board.
As a person: Charismatic, ambitious and confident. A natural born leader, yet may be bossy and irritable.
As a yes or no answer: Yes, if it takes boldness or leadership.
With other cards: With the Emperor, great, structured power. With the Ace of Wands, a major new initiative is underway. The Queen of Wands brings a powerful alliance, but two huge egos will require space. Ego fights and control concerns could be a problem, especially with the Devil or the Five of Wands.
The King of Wands has passion fully grown. He still has all the fire, but he has learned that fire alone builds nothing. It needs guidance. It needs other people. Upright, he says to step up, believe in your vision, and own your destination. Reversed, he asks: are you leading or merely bulldozing? Is anyone still following because they want to? Be the kind of leader you’d want to work for. It’s more difficult than it seems.
