1. International Age System

2. Traditional Korean Age

The traditional Korean age system was used in Korea for centuries and was based on a different way of counting age. In this system, a baby was considered 1 year old at birth instead of 0. This was because the time spent in the mother's womb was counted as the baby's first year of life.

Instead of getting 1 year older on their birthday, everyone became one year older together on New Year's Day. As a result, a person's Korean age could be one or even two years older than their international age, depending on when they were born.

For example, if a baby is born on 30 December, they would be 1 year old at birth and 2 years old on 1 January, even though they were only a few days old.

To avoid confusion, South Korea officially adopted the International Age System for legal and government purposes in 2023. Today, birthdays in South Korea are officially counted the same way as in most other countries, although some people still use the traditional system in everyday conversations.

3. East Asian Age Reckoning

East Asian Age Reckoning is a traditional way of calculating age that was followed for centuries in countries such as China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. Just like the traditional Korean system, a baby was considered 1 year old at birth instead of 0. A person's age also increased by one at the beginning of the Lunar New Year or the calendar New Year, depending on local customs, rather than on their birthday.

This method was based on the belief that a person's life begins before birth, so the time spent in the mother's womb was included as the first year of life. Because everyone grew older on the same day each year, people born only a few days apart could have the same age.

For example, if a baby was born just before the New Year, they could be 2 years old within a few days, even though they had only recently been born. Today, most East Asian countries have adopted the International Age System for official purposes such as education, healthcare, travel, and legal documents. However, this traditional method remains an important part of the region's history and culture.

4. Lunar Calendar Age

In some cultures, birthdays are celebrated according to the lunar calendar instead of the Gregorian (solar) calendar. Since the lunar calendar follows the phases of the Moon, the birthday falls on a different Gregorian date each year. However, a person's age still increases by one year every time their lunar birthday occurs.

This method is commonly used for traditional celebrations in countries such as China and Vietnam and for certain religious and cultural events in other parts of Asia. Many families keep track of both their Gregorian birthday for official records and their lunar birthday for festivals and family celebrations.

For example, a person born on the 15th day of the first lunar month will celebrate their birthday on that lunar date every year. On the Gregorian calendar, this could fall on a different day or even a different month each year. Although most countries now use the Gregorian calendar for official purposes such as passports, schools, and government records, the lunar calendar continues to play an important role in many cultural traditions.

5. Traditional Indian Practices

In India, age is officially calculated using the date of birth in the Gregorian calendar. However, for religious ceremonies and astrology, many families also note a person's birth according to the Hindu lunar calendar, which is used to determine festivals, rituals, and birth anniversaries.
