Kamika Ekadashi is one of the most sacred Ekadashis dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It falls during the Krishna Paksha of the holy month of Shravan, a period known for devotion, fasting, and spiritual practices.

Shravan is primarily associated with Lord Shiva, but it is also considered an auspicious time to worship Lord Vishnu and seek divine blessings. Observing Kamika Ekadashi with sincerity is believed to cleanse past karmas, bring inner peace, and guide devotees toward spiritual growth.

Key Dates, Tithi and Timings 2026

Kamika Ekadashi is to be celebrated on 9th August 2026

  • Ekadashi Tithi Begins:  01:59 AM, August 8, 2026
  • Ekadashi Tithi Ends: 11:04 AM on Sunday, August 9, 2026.

Significance of Kamika Ekadashi

According to Hindu scriptures, observing Kamika Ekadashi is considered highly rewarding. It is believed that worshipping Lord Vishnu on this day helps remove negative karma, purify the mind, and bring prosperity and happiness.

Offering Tulsi leaves to Lord Vishnu is especially significant, as Tulsi is regarded as His most beloved offering.

Since Kamika Ekadashi falls in Shravan, devotees often combine their Vishnu worship with prayers to Lord Shiva. This unique combination makes the day spiritually powerful, encouraging self-discipline, compassion, and devotion.

Difference Between Devshayani Ekadashi, Kamika Ekadashi, and Shravana Putrada Ekadashi

While all three Ekadashis are dedicated to Lord Vishnu, each has a distinct purpose. Devshayani Ekadashi marks the beginning of Chaturmas, the four sacred months when Lord Vishnu is believed to enter Yoga Nidra (divine sleep).

Kamika Ekadashi, observed during the Krishna Paksha of Shravan, focuses on self-purification, forgiveness, and spiritual growth. Shravana Putrada Ekadashi, observed during the Shukla Paksha of Shravan, is especially significant for couples seeking the blessings of a healthy child and for devotees praying for family happiness and prosperity.

Together, these three Ekadashis encourage devotees to deepen their faith, observe fasting with devotion, and seek Lord Vishnu’s blessings throughout the sacred Chaturmas period.

Puja Vidhi for Kamika Ekadashi

Begin the day with an early morning bath and wear clean clothes. Clean the puja area and place an idol or image of Lord Vishnu. Offer Tulsi leaves, fresh flowers, incense, fruits, and sweets while chanting “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya”.

Reading the Vishnu Sahasranama or the Bhagavad Gita, or listening to devotional bhajans, is considered highly auspicious.

Many devotees observe a full-day fast by avoiding grains and cereals. Others choose a fruit-based fast according to their health and family rituals. The fast ends on Dwadashi during the Parana time after offering prayers.

Benefits of Observing Kamika Ekadashi

Observing Kamika Ekadashi is believed to:

  • Remove the effects of past sins and negative karma.
  • Bring peace, prosperity, and good fortune.
  • Strengthen devotion to Lord Vishnu.
  • Improve mental clarity and spiritual discipline.
  • Help devotees progress on the path of righteousness.

Conclusion

Kamika Ekadashi is more than a ritual of fasting. It is an opportunity to strengthen faith, practise self-discipline, and seek the blessings of Lord Vishnu. Observing the vrat with devotion, offering Tulsi leaves, and spending the day in prayer can fill life with peace, prosperity, and spiritual fulfilment. As this sacred Ekadashi falls during the divine month of Shravan, it offers devotees a meaningful chance to deepen their connection with the divine and embrace the values of compassion, purity, and devotion.
