As soon as the Shravan month begins, Shiva temples start filling up with bhakts. But one thing you will notice almost everywhere is the number of unmarried girls and women offering prayers to Lord Shiva. But why is it so?

The belief behind this is that every woman wishes for a husband like Shiva. Someone loving, devoted, understanding, protective, and respectful towards their partner. Shiv Ji holds a special place in Hinduism. He is worshipped as a part of the Trimurti of Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh. But the month of Shravan is considered especially sacred to him.

Shravan month Tithi and key dates:

Shravan month start and end date: 30th July to 28th August 2026 for North Indian states that use the Purnimanta calendar. And from 13th August to 10th September for the South Indian states following the Amavasyant calendar. Apart from being the holiest month as a whole, Shravan is also the time of major Hindu festivals like

Sravan Somwar Vrat: 3, 10, 17 & 24 August 2026 (Mondays)
Hairyali Teej: 15 August 2026
Nag Panchami: 19 August 2026
Raksha Bandhan: 29 August 2026
Shravan Purnima (Full Moon and End of Shravan): August 29, 2026

What is Shravan?

Shravan, also known as Sawan. Which means rain. It is the fifth month in the Hindu luni-solar calendar. It usually falls around the end of July and continues through August. The Shravan month is also known as a month of greenery, devotion, and spiritual practices.

According to the Hindu calendar, Shravan begins on the Pratipada Tithi (first day) of the Shukla Paksha after the Ashadha Amavasya and continues until the Purnima of the month. The exact dates change every year depending on the lunar calendar.

Significance of Shravan month:

Spiritually Uplifting:
This month is said to amplify the deeds you do. Be it prayers, fasting, or simply good acts. So people try to speak well, donate, help others, or be less negative. And widely believed to uplift spiritually.
Best for your introspection:
In ancient times, the Shravan month coincided with the monsoon. Hence, people used to remain indoors. So it became a natural time to stop, think, and collect oneself towards one’s higher self. Allowing people to slow down from the fast-paced daily life.
The Earth feels more alive:
The word ‘sawan’ means ‘rain’, and it signifies all that is green and fresh. It is that time when it is said that the Earth itself worships Lord Shiva. By displaying flowers, flowing rivers, and rain. This is why devotees use fresh flowers, leaves, and water in their pujas during shravan.

Why is Shravan dedicated to Lord Shiva?

When we think of Shiva, we think of the protector of the universe. Many stories in Hindu culture connect Lord Shiva especially with the month of Shravan.
One of the most popular stories comes from Samudra Manthan. During the churning of the ocean, a deadly poison called Halahala came out. To save the world, Lord Shiva drank the poison and held it in his throat. This turned his throat blue and earned him the name Neelkanth.

After that, the devas continuously offered water to Lord Shiva to reduce the effect of the poison. Because of this, even today, bhakts perform Jal Abhishek during Shravan and offer water, Gangajal, and milk to Shivling.

Another beautiful story connects Shravan with Goddess Parvati. She performed years of intense tapasya to win Lord Shiva as her husband. Her patience, faith, and devotion finally touched Lord Shiva’s heart, and he accepted her as his wife.

Because of this story, many unmarried women observe the Shravan Somvar Vrat and pray for a husband with qualities similar to Lord Shiva.

Why Is Shravan Somvar So Important?

Mondays are already considered sacred to Lord Shiva. During Shravan, every Monday, known as Shravan Somvar, becomes even more auspicious. Many unmarried women observe a fast on these Mondays and visit Shiva temples to seek blessings for a good husband and a happy married life. Married women also observe the vrat for the well-being and long life of their husbands.

How to observe the Shravan Somvar vrat?

Anyone who is seeking the blessing of Lord Shiva can follow these simple steps while on a fast for Shravan Somwar:

Wake up early, as early as you can. Preferably during Brahma Muhurat (between 4:00 AM and 6:00 AM).

Take a bath and put on clean clothes (preferably white or light-coloured).

Clean your puja space and place a photo or murti of Lord Shiva.
If possible, offer water or milk on a Shivling. (Could also offer bel patra, white flowers, dhatura, or fruits).

Light a diya and incense sticks, and chant “Om Namah Shivaya”
Recite or listen to Shiva Chalisa or do a simple Shiva mantra jaap.

Observe a fast: You can do a full fast on only water, called nirjala vrat, or a fruit-only fast, or eat only one simple meal without onion and garlic.

Break your fast after sunset with a simple prayer and light food (if doing a partial fast)

Conclusion

Shravan month is much more than just a reminder that spirituality and faith don’t need to be loud. It can be quiet, simple, and personal. Whether that’s chanting mantras, lighting a lamp, or simply sitting in silence for a few minutes each day, the focus is on your intent.
This month is not about strict guidelines while worshipping Lord Shiva. But also about learning the life lessons he teaches us. Whether it is about leading a simple life while showing acts of kindness to the people around you. Or it is about selflessness and showing our gratitude towards nature and life.

“Shravan ka mahina chalu ho gaya hai, vrat karna chalu kar do.” Almost all unmarried Indian girls and women hear this from their mothers and people around them.
