Devotees consider the month of Sawan the holiest for the worship of Lord Shiva and Nag Devatas. The serpent king Takshaka bit King Parikshit, and he died. Filled with grief and anger, his son, King Janamejaya, decided to destroy the entire Naga clan by performing a powerful ritual called the Sarpa Yajna.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>As the sacrifice began, the priests pulled thousands of snakes into the sacred fire. Just when they were about to draw Takshaka into the fire, a young sage named Astika stepped forward. He requested Janamejaya to stop the sacrifice. And reminded him that punishing an entire race for the mistake of one was unjust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moved by Astika&#8217;s wisdom, Janamejaya ended the yajna and spared the Nagas. People believe that Nag Panchami commemorates this act of compassion, forgiveness, and harmony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why do people worship snakes on Nag Panchami?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>People call them &#8216;Nag Devatas&#8217; and consider them divine beings, not just animals, in Hinduism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lord Shiva\u2019s connection with snakes is also divine. When the deadly poison Halahala emerged and threatened to destroy the universe, Lord Shiva consumed it. It is believed that some drops of the poison that were spilt were consumed by snakes.
